What is the full version of PWD

PWD: Public Works Department

PWD is Public Works Department. It is an Indian Govt. of India department that is responsible for the development and repair of the infrastructure of government such as roads, government building bridges, water system, bridges as well as other. It is a central body which is responsible for all public sector work in India. The provision of drinking water that is safe for the city and to repair damaged water pipes is also the responsibility of PWD. Furthermore in the event of harm to any government school roads, hospitals, schools and bridges, repairs are made by the PWD.

PWD is present across all states of India. It has divisions, subdivisions, and sections. In all states, it is responsible for almost the same work and responsibilities, like designing and building all public projects carried out by the Government, including building and developing roads, roads for safety, facilities on roads and highways as well as maintenance and restructuring of government buildings and buildings. This type of work formerly conducted by the military in India. Later in the beginning of the 19th century, the responsibility for public works was transferred to a particular area of Indian Civil Service.

The Work of PWD can be classified into four categories:

  • Construction, Development, and Safety of Roads, Highways, Flyovers
  • Construction and Maintenance of Government Buildings
  • Drinking Water System
  • Construction and Maintenance of Bridge
